To help authors achieve their goals in publishing strategically, the Library provides detailed information on the following topics:
- Publishing Strategically
- Publication and Journal Metrics
- Open Access Publishing
- Publishing Research Data
The Library publishes both UTS Research and research aligned to the University’s mission and goals via:
Depositing to OPUS
Depositing your work to OPUS is done via Symplectic Elements, the UTS research outputs management system.
Once deposited, your works are automatically sent to OPUS and placed temporarily in Closed Access until reviewed by UTS Library staff.
- Library staff check to ensure compliance with copyright and publisher agreements.
- If the version you supplied cannot be made available via OPUS, you may receive an email requesting a copy of the Accepted Manuscript.
Once items are cleared of copyright constraints and/or publisher embargoes, the work is moved to Open Access and made accessible to the public. View OPUS Help > Deposit for further information.
UTS ePRESS
UTS Library manages the University’s Open Access Press, UTS ePRESS. The Press publishes high quality peer reviewed research of both UTS and non-UTS authors.
Established in 2004, UTS ePRESS has published over 20 peer-reviewed journals, over 35 books, and various conference proceedings and student journals.
Fully Open Access, the Press has the University’s mission at its heart – to combine research excellence and positive societal impact for the communities in which it is embedded – local, national, and international. Of great importance to UTS ePRESS is the publication of Indigenous authors and their supporters and other works of social conscience and research excellence. Often giving a voice to the disenfranchised, UTS ePRESS serves the UTS mission to be a world-leading public university of technology for the benefit of all. The Press is managed by the Library’s Open Scholarship and Copyright department.
For more information visit the UTS ePRESS website.
Manage your copyright
Some publishers will require researchers to hand over ownership of their work in return for publication. To retain copyright in your own work and the rights to share it, we strongly encourage you to read and fill out the SPARC Author Addendum.
For more information see Consider Rights Management and Publishing Considerations in the Copyright Toolbox.
Publishing without an article processing charge
In 2024, UTS Library is continuing support for Read & Publish agreements (also known as Transformative Agreements). These agreements allow UTS staff and higher degree research students to publish Open Access in select journals without paying article processing charges (APCs), subject to meeting all requirements. There may still be other charges incurred such as page costs and colour charges which the agreement does not cover. Find out more about the agreements by viewing Open Access Publishing.
These agreements have been negotiated by CAUL (Council of Australian University Librarians) for institutions in Australia and New Zealand.
